Thomas “Tom” P. Schmidt Jr.
October 7, 1962 - December 26, 2024
Tom, affectionately known as "Doc," "Rock," "Schmidty," “Tommy,” and "Bop," rang his final bell at the age of 62, signaling the end of a life lived boldly and on his own terms. Born and raised in Olney, PA, Tom eventually established deep roots in Phoenixville, PA, where he became a local legend.
A connoisseur of B-movies, master prankster, and avid collector of motorcycles, watches, tattoos, and lifelong friends, Tom had a knack for turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. His garage was a museum, his stories were epic, and his laughter was contagious.
Tom's journey from a quiet, reserved young man to a larger-than-life character began with his enlistment in the United States Navy in 1982. Stationed first in Long Beach, CA, he discovered his true calling. Rising to the rank of Hull Technician First Class (HT1), he served as a steelworker and aviation aircrewman, earning several commendations for his service.
After hanging up his Navy uniform, Tom became the Highway Foreman 2 for PennDot that everyone knew and respected. He was also a proud member of the Loyal Order of Moose, VFW Downingtown Post 845, and the Blue Comets Motorcycle Club. His sports allegiance was a complex tapestry, passionately supporting the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles, and, of course, the Michigan Wolverines-"Go Blue!"
When asked about the best advice he'd ever received, Tom quipped, "Never give up… don't listen to those who say you can't do something." Words he lived by, inspiring all who knew him.
Tom's legacy is carried on by his extensive network of friends and family. We honor the countless individuals whose lives he touched with his humor, generosity, and indomitable spirit.
He is survived by his loving wife, Donna (Trombetti) Schmidt; Children: Vincent (Felyshia), Lindsey (Patrick), Julie (Dylan), John (Jamie), Nikki, and Torianne; many grandchildren and one Great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife Christine "Tina" Schmidt and granddaughter, Adriana.
A Celebration of Tom's Life will be held at the VFW, Post 845, 4601 Lincoln Highway, Downingtown, PA 19335 on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 1:00 pm with a brief service beginning at 2:00 pm.
In the meantime, raise a glass of Southern Comfort, wear mismatched sneakers, or feel his presence in the rumble of a Harley roaring down the road.
