Robert J. Vekony, 85, husband of Jane D. (Donalson) Vekony of Norristown, PA, died on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 in Seasons Hospice, Phoenixville, PA.
Born on December 13, 1931 in Passaic, NJ, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anastasia (Yachechak) Vekony.
Bob was a systems engineer with IBM before he retired after 28 years of service.
Prior to his retirement and move to Arizona, Bob his wife, Jane, and his daughter, Susan, lived on Valley Forge Mountain for more than 35 years.
He was an active parishioner of Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge National Park.
Early in his life, Bob knew he wanted to be an engineer. After graduating high school, he entered Lehigh University to pursue his career goal. He earned degrees in Engineering Physics and Electrical Engineering before being awarded a Fellowship to Cambridge University in England for postgraduate studies. Upon completing his studies, he returned to the United States and joined the Strategic Air Command (SAC) of the U.S. Air Force as a Captain and served as a navigator in bomber crew.
Bob's work career included positions with Westinghouse and General Electric before joining IBM, where he participated in the evolution of computers from UNIVACs to handheld computers used today by field engineers to gather site information. He also wrote computer programs for IBM's Legal Department.
Always a lover of the outdoors, Bob liked camping, walking his beloved dog, Tasha, several times a day, and participating in sports, such as track, wrestling (for which he won a letter at Lehigh), skiing and tennis. Some of his favorite vacations were to ride the Colorado River rapids and ski The Rockies.
He will be very much missed by those who loved him.
A Graveside Service will be held in Washingon Memorial Chapel Churchyard, Route 23, Valley Forge, PA, on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 11:00 am.
