Joseph A. Kacanda

Joseph A. Kacanda, 76, of Birdsboro, PA passed away at home on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Born on October 7, 1948 in Norristown, PA, he was the son of the late John and Bertha (Getzey) Kacanda.

A shy child, Joe was a talented piano player and member of the Junior Octave Club. He graduated from Norristown High School class of 1966, where he was remembered for riding a horse to school one morning to impress a girl. Growing up in Norristown gave Joe a lifelong love of zeps and cheesesteaks.

Joe attended Albright College where he played defensive end for the football team while pursuing his bachelor’s degree in history. He was a proud member and eventual president of the Alpha Pi Omega fraternity. Joe reconnected with his fraternity brothers later in life, hosting two reunions. He went on to receive his master’s degree from Kutztown University and had a successful career as a guidance counselor in the Pottstown School District.

Many remember gathering at Joe’s farm, which was a labor of love for him and his former wife Colleen. The rock walls Joe built around the property will be a lasting testament to his patience, determination, and creativity. Joe maintained a passion for history throughout his life, serving as the treasurer of the Board for the Amity Heritage Society. He lovingly restored his 1959 Jaguar and 1965 Austin Healey in retirement.

Joe is survived by his daughter Leah Kacanda, her wife Laura Wilburn, and a grandson on the way, who will be raised with stories of Joe’s life and the love he shared with his family. Joe was an anchor for his six siblings who survive him: John (MaryAnn), Roberta Zehner (Dan), Greg (Patty), Betsey Conway, Steve, and Mark (Patti). He was preceded in death by Colleen Kacanda.

Services will be private. The family welcomes donations in Joe’s honor to Amity Heritage Society (PO Box 443, Douglasville, PA 19518).
