James R. Mackey, 77, beloved husband of Elizabeth R. Howard of Phoenixville, PA passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Phoenixville Hospital.
Born on July 23, 1947, in Phoenixville, PA he was the son of the late Francis and Dorothy (Detwiler) Mackey.
James was a Phoenixville High School graduate and received his Bachelor's Degree from St. Joseph University.He owned and worked as a Tax Accountant for James R. Mackey, Accounting, in Phoenixville since 1981. He was assisted by his long-time tax associate, Kathy Gresko, in the practice. He also shared a practice with Ed Strzelecki for many years.
He was a member of Charlestown United Methodist Church, longtime member of Phoenixville Country Club and Springford Country Club, and a social member of Brookside Country Club, Pottstown. He was a social member of VFW Post 1564, Phoenixville.
He was an avid competitive golfer, which sport he only took up when he was 40. He played golf in the Kimberton GC league with his buddy, Don Mahoney, in recent years. Jim loved all sports, and had played competitively in local baseball leagues, ending with the 1810 Barn team, where he was the pitcher.
Jim obtained his pilot's license at age 57 and owned a small plane that he enjoyed flying with his friend, Pat McAuliffe.
In the eighties, he was a member of the Phoenixville School Board. He also served as Treasurer for PAEDCO in Phoenixville, and was a Trustee on the Phoenixville Library Board. He was on the Zoning Hearing Board for Charlestown Township. He was active in his community.
Jim was a local historian, delighting in stories of past events and people of the town. He knew everybody, and everyone knew him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 children: Leigh, wife of Gilbert (Ben) Thompson; Jeffrey Mackey, husband of Erin Devitt Mackey.
5 Grandchildren, Lexi Thompson, Mckenzi Thompson, Ty Thompson, Atticus Mackey, and Henry Mackey.
3 Sisters, Dorothy Dye, Jean Marie Schwartz, and Deborah Mackey.
Nieces and nephews, Mathew Dye, Gregory Dye, Bryan Schwartz, Joseph Schwartz, and Sarah Sutton.
A visitation will be held in the Devlin-Gatcha Funeral Home, 517 S. Main Street, Phoenixville, PA on Thursday, November 21, 2024 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Service at Charlestown United Methodist Church, 650 Church Road, Malvern, PA on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 11:00 am.
