Eugene J. Matta, 82, husband of Bernadette (Sweeney) Matta, of Phoenixville, PA, died Saturday morning, January 19, 2019, at Highgate Paoli Pointe, with his family by his side.
Born August 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Kassel) Matta. Gene was a graduate of Phoenixville High School, class of 1954, worked at Kulp & Gordon Motor Freight and served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. He was owner of the former Kohn’s Tavern, Inc., for 41 years where he founded the Kohn’s K-Bar Football Club, and sponsored the Kohn’s Annual Golf Tournament for 25 years at Kimberton Golf Club. An avid deep sea fisherman, golfer, Phillies and Eagles fan and loved to spend time with his family at their home on Long Beach Island, NJ. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Phoenixville, the Polish Club, Valley Forge, West End, and Friendship Fire Companies.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, surviving are daughter Kathleen Matta, Spring City, Michael husband of Vanessa of Phoenixville, brother Charles husband of Judy Matta of Loveland, CO, grandchildren Tobius, Gavin, Ava and Evan, and uncle to many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass in St. Ann Chapel, 604 South Main Street, Phoenixville, PA on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. William Donnelly officiating. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday morning from 8:45 to 9:45am at the Chapel.
