Charles J. McCarthy, formerly of Diamond Rock Road, Phoenixville, and most recently living at Columbia Cottage in Collegeville, died Sunday, May 22 at Seasons Hospice, Phoenixville Hospital. He was 94.
Born in Philadelphia, Mr. McCarthy was a son of Charles J. McCarthy and Antoinette Giannotti. He lived in Phoenixville for 50 years, working as a computer programmer and systems analyst for various companies until his retirement from Independence Blue Cross in 1987. He later served as Schuylkill Township tax collector for more than two decades, until 2013.
Mr. McCarthy graduated from Audubon (N.J.) High School and served as a sergeant in the 20th Bombardment Squadron of the Army 15th Air Force in Italy during World War II. After marrying the late Helen E. Hoeger, he studied agriculture at Rutgers University and received his M.S. in horticulture from Michigan State College in 1950. He continued his studies at the University of California-Davis and worked as a county agricultural extension agent in Michigan for several years. His studies led to a lifelong love of organic gardening.
Mr. McCarthy's other hobbies included photography, deep sea fishing, and raising rabbits, sheep, and tropical fish. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America Troop 73 of Chester County Council, which honored him with a distinguished service award.
Surviving are his sons Charles J. McCarthy (Ann Melious) of Fremont, Calif.; and Philip G. McCarthy (Heather) of Candler, N.C.; daughters Lorraine McCarthy (Paul Bugos) of Philadelphia; and Katharine A. McCarthy (Gordon Brown) of Silver Spring, Md.; his sister, Nancy Volin of Sparta, N.J.; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Ellen McCarthy.
Relatives and friends will be received on Saturday, May 28, from 9:30 to 10:30 at Devlin Rosmos Kepp & Gatcha Funeral Home, 517 S. Main St. at Fourth Ave., Phoenixville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Ann Chapel, 604 S. Main St., Phoenixville, on Saturday at 11:00. The Reverend John J. Newns will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Ann Roman Catholic Church Cemetery on Pot House Road in Phoenixville.
