Alan F. Smith, 72, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side on Saturday, May 5, 2018. He was born in Fayetteville, N.C. the son of the late R. Foster and Josephine (Cooper) Smith. Alan was the beloved husband of 34 years of Jean (Langone) and the loving and devoted father of Jason. He was the brother of Frederick and Michael Smith and Sarah Hester. He is survived by several nieces and nephews and will be greatly missed.
Alan attended Fayetteville High School and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Following college, he lived and worked in the Washington D.C. area in the field of satellite remote sensing at DIA, G.E. and Autometric. He also served in the 401
st
MID (Strategic). As a second career, he received an education degree from West Chester University and transferred his passion for the sciences into teaching earth science and astronomy.
For the past 30 years he made his home in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Alan loved family vacations at the beach, enjoyed traveling, and playing golf. He had a passion for history and was a Civil War enthusiast and family genealogist. He was a “southern gentlemen”, always ready for a lengthy conversation on a diverse range of topics. Above all, he was devoted to his family.
